Lucas is all grown up

I decided when Lucas was one that I would take away his binky at 18 months the exact date October 1. Well, as that date approached I couldn't do it I knew we had the 6 week trip to Utah coming up, and I felt like he and I needed that security. So when we got home at the beginning of January it was time to take it away. I cried more than he did because I knew he was a little boy and not my baby. That morning he woke up and I talked to him about how babies have binkies and he is not a baby any more so we needed to throw his away. I took him to the garbage can and asked him to throw his binky away. At which point he threw away the dinosaur in his other hand. We talked a little bit more and he started to throw his binky away, but grabbed it out of the trash as soon as he let go. I knew we had to take a different approach so I let him suck on it for a minute and I cried for a minute. I decided we were both too weak so he sat on my lap and we cut the nipple off that way he knew it was on purpose and he would not keep bothering me to fix it. We gathered all the binkies and cut the nipples off and threw all of them, but one away. He accepted that, but the rest of the day he kept the cut binky in his mouth. If it fell out (which it did often) he would put it back in. That night I threw away the final cut binky. He was really a champ through the whole thing and it was rather painless. Although, I have to say a few days after I took it away he woke up kind of early and would not go back to sleep so I tore apart the house looking for a binky. We did not have any because I knew I was too weak to have one in the house so I threw them all away. I have to say I have loved that Lucas took a binky and the little bit of effort it took to break the habit was totally worth all those moments when he was a baby and I just didn't know how to soothe him.
